1 Recombination in fungi: unique organisms for the study of meiosis some of the clearest demonstrations of recombination come from organisms in which the gametes formed during meiosis stay attached to one another in an ascus . These include Brewer’s yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and bread mold ( Neurospora crassa ) Fig. 5.14 • analysis of all of the gametes from a single meiosis allows one to observe recombination events that would not be apparent when observing random meiotic products • since fungi have both haploid and diploid life-cycles, the phenotypes of the haploid spores (gametes) can be measured directly Fig. 5.15 meiotic segregation of alleles at 2 unlinked loci in Brewer’s yeast: haploid in fungi, lower case = mutant ; upper case = WILD-TYPE
