Yang 1 You, Together The interior of a small house. The front door is stage right. A small entryway between the front door and the living room. A small dining room to the left of the living room and a small kitchen with a wide framed opening upstage of the dining room. It is musty throughout the house, probably from the shelves and shelves of hundreds of books in the entryway, living room, and dining room. Various trinkets, tapestries, rugs, and furniture verging on cliché-Bohemian fill the living room. The dining room has a wooden table with four wooden chairs. Act I Scene I Morning. Cynthia is in the kitchen. Enter Ben and Emily carrying luggage in the entryway. Emily: (setting down her bag and marveling at the books everywhere) Oh my god… (abruptly) Are your parents home? Ben: (opens front door) Here, you can go in. I’m gonna get the rest of the stuff. Emily: Wait! No, no, no, no, no. Come with me. Ben: What? Why? Emily: I’m scared. Ben: (in playful disbelief) What? Emily: I’m scared. Ben: (with an encouraging look) No, no, no, no, no. It’ll be fine. They love you. Plus, we’re only staying for a bit to say hi. Emily: (only half-convinced) Okay. Emily walks through the door into the living room then hesitates. She turns to the audience.
Yang 2 Emily: I am at my friend Ben’s house. We’ve been friends for almost two years now. He lives in Philadelphia and since I’d never been there, he invited me to stay at his house over the weekend. I was probably more excited – and nervous – than I should have been, but I’d always been curious about his family. From the way he talks about them, I felt like I might love them too. Emily peeks into the dining room and finally resolves to enter the kitchen. She gently knocks on the wall. Cynthia starts. Cynthia: Oh, you scared me! Emily: Sorry! I was just... Cynthia: (warmly) No, no, no, no, no, it’s fine. (holds out hand) Cynthia. Emily: (shaking hand) Emily. Cynthia: Glad to meet you! Would you like something to drink? Seltzer, juice milk, coffee...
