Crime: Dr. Britz Extra Credit – Bobby Frank Cherry (16 th Street Baptist Church Bombing) In May of 2002, Bobby Frank Cherry was being tried for taking part in the 16 th Street Baptist Church Bombing that occurred on September 15, 1963. Four little girls died during that incident. The defense rested after only one day of deliberation. During the last days, there was not much said about Mr. Cherry that was bad. A barber, a preacher, and a young man all testified that Bobby Frank Cherry was a good man. They claimed that the only time that they ever heard a racial slur come out of Mr. Cherry’s mouth was when he said the word nigger. They seemed to think that this was not a big deal. The preacher even admitted to having used the word back before he found God. They said that to them it was an everyday part of the dialect. Bobby Wayne Cherry Jr., Mr. Cherry’s grandson, also testified on his grandfathers behalf. He claimed that his grandfather did not join the Klan for racist or hateful reasons. He
