Notes 1/24/07 Today- National Beer Can Day Typology - continued Developmentally Limited Alcoholism - Frequent heavy drinking o mainly male’s in their early to mid 20’s o Cuts across social classes o Around mid 20’s they tend to age out of the heavy drinking o 5 or more drinks per sitting at least 5 times a month o Drinking is episodic, otherwise the person has a pretty normal lifestyle o Drinking is sometimes the focus, but other things are appreciated in life o Isn’t necessarily harmful to one’s health- you have to drink more often to harm yourself Negative Affect Alcoholism o Mainly affects women instead of men- have some sort of psychological issue and the drinking is some attempt to deal with it o Once the issue is gone, the alcoholism goes away o Middle class guys who have relatively low levels of self-esteem and higher levels of stress or anxiety are more likely to drink in excess o You need to raise the person’s self esteem and the drinking should go away Other approaches to alcoholism
