RN 101 Essay Assignment #1 Due at the beginning of class on Monday, February 11, 2008 How to write your first discussion paper: 1. Select a small section of biblical text (roughly ten verses) from Genesis or Exodus. The following passages suggest the desired length and focus. These are only suggestions; you may choose a passage you prefer. From Genesis, passages might include: 2:14-20 (curses), 11:1-9 (Babel), 16:7-15 (Hagar’s theophany), 18:9-15 (Sarah’s laughter), 28:10-17 (Joseph’s dream), or 50:15-21 (Joseph’s assurance to his brothers). From Exodus, choices might include: 13:1-10 (the Passover), 33:12-16 (God’s sparing of Israel) or 33:17-23 (Moses “seeing” God). 2. When you choose your text, look for something that you find interesting or problematic. This will help you to develop a clear thesis, i.e., what you think is really at stake in this passage and what would be missing from the Bible if the passage were deleted or forgotten.
