Notes: August 2, 2007 2 more theories of prostitution: *Feminist Theory- we have a patriarchal system which creates the supply and the demand for prostitution. On the demand side, we raise generation after generation of men who are taught to seek the sexual domination of men. Going to prostitutes is one way of achieving this desire. On the supply side, we raise generation after generation of women who are taught to be submissive. Because they have fewer opportunities to work, women may be turned towards prostitution as a means to survive. ~In some countries where women have no status, the number of women who enter into prostitution is much higher. ~In countries where women have more of a status, they are less likely to enter into prostitution. ~Feminists don’t like pornography or prostitution because it makes it seem like women are made for nothing but pleasing men. *The Social Psychological Theory- for a woman to become a prostitute, a combination of both social and psychological factors must come into play. ~3 of the factors: ^Predisposing Factors- psychological factors such as being abused. Seeing your mother or sisters being promiscuous causes you to be promiscuous. ^Attracting Factor- you have to look at it like being a prostitute means making a lot of money and having a relatively easy life. You are making more money than most people. ^Precipitating factors- your world has to come together such that you choose prostitution over other work. You are unemployed and can’t find any other job. Meeting and becoming friends with a madam may introduce you into the lifestyle. ~Psychologists think that the predisposing factors as the most important factors.
