Notes: July 9, 2007 Deviance is any violation of a rule or norm. ***If a 18 year old has sex with a 17 year old this is considered contributing to the delinquency of a minor*** ;) A Summary of Two Perspectives: *Positivist Perspective (came first) - Deviance is intrinsically real. There is something that sets it apart from conventional behavior. Tend to look at the people who engage in deviant behavior. We assume that deviants have a certain characteristic that sets them apart. You see deviant behavior as wrong and evil! Better for studying things that people generally agree is extremely deviant (murder, rape, child molestation, kidnapping, assault and battery) ~Absolutism- Deviance is absolute, intrinsically real; hence, deviance or deviants can be subject of study ~Objectivism- Deviance is an observable object; hence, objective research methods can be used. They studied deviance like you study a natural object. ~Determinism- Deviance is determined behavior, a Product of Causation; hence,
