Notes 4/4/07 Family System’s continued o Absent family system o The alcoholic has been permanently separated from the family. The alcoholic has left or kicked out, and he severed ties with the family of origin (parents or siblings). They have little family contact and they have very few social or vocational ties to others. o They either have contact with social service providers or other alcoholics. Neither of these provides adequate social support. o It can be extremely difficult to re-unite the family and the alcoholic. It is almost impossible to re-unite the father and children or father and wife. You can re-establish family of origin ties. They never saw you at your worst, so they are inclined to be more forgiving. o If the alcoholic can successfully complete treatment, he or she may create a new “nuclear family” (new spouse with new children). o Treatment is less towards reconciling family members. You have to tell them what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear. The alcoholic cannot force himself back into their lives. Work on salvaging the relationships you can and then work on the
