Notes: July 10, 2007 3 versions of Anomie-Strain Theory (positivist) *Merton: Goal-Means Gap= Deviance (ANIME) ~Normlessness- you don’t know what is right or wrong ^ During a depression, do you let your kids starve or steal food? ~American Dream- everyone has the same opportunity to work hard, study, take chances, and be successful ^ Some people have an easier road than others ~ The gap between want and getting what we want drives people to deviant behavior (Strain) ~We are pursuing success. That is the goal ~When people are faced with the Goal-Means Gap, they can do two things: ^conformity- they accept that if they keep working hard, they will one day be successful ^innovation- they find an illegitimate way to become successful ^ritualism- if you come from the lower middle class, you modify your goals over the years. You essentially lower your goals. It’s not realistic to dream that you are going to one day be as rich as Tiger Woods. The means don’t change, only the goal does. ^retreatism-These are your vagrants or outcasts.
