Notes: July 13, 2007 Feminist Theory - all the other theories apply to men. You can’t lump men and women in the same category. Women aren’t motivated by deprivation, the philosophy to be rich. They are taught to cultivate relationships. If you look at women as both offenders and victims, you will see the inequality. Women are still second class citizens and they don’t ever really kill or commit serious crimes. The cause of them engaging in serious crimes goes back to them being second class citizens. We are a male dominated society. When women commit property crimes, they pass bad checks, welfare fraud, credit card fraud; these are your more petty crimes. In recent years there hasn’t been an increase in female participation in larger crimes (embezzlement). Power Theory- there is an inequality in power in society. Whatever power you do have affects the type of deviance you will engage in. The more powerful people in society commit the more profitable crimes, and the less powerful people commit the less profitable crimes. Power or the lack thereof can determine the type of deviant behavior that you can engage in. If you are going to commit a corporate crime, you have to be able to get a corporate job. Power can actually cause deviance. It’s more likely for the rich to commit more profitable crimes that the poor are to commit less profitable crimes because: The powerful suffer from relative deprivation to a certain extent. They want to have more than their neighbor. The more money you make, the more you feel like the next level is almost in your reach. The powerful enjoy greater deviant opportunity.
