Transportation Notes from 3/27 Cognition -3 stages of memory: encoding storage retrieval Storage has 3 parts: sensory memory, working memory, and long term memory Sensory Memory -all info is lost at a max of 3 seconds -we don’t pay attention to everything (example: redrawing a penny) -things are attend to are not always right -Implications: we don’t pay attention to everything on the road Sperling’s study of iconic memory (sensory memory) -showed participant letters for short amount of time and asked them to recall them -showed letters, then a blank screen, played a tone (pitch corresponded to which row of letters to recall), participants did a good job at this -what we perceive is greater then what we recall Short term memory -Duration is 10-15 seconds -we remember 7 + or – 2 pieces of info -amount is flexible (remember more when we chunk) -central executive component: manages the info -visio spacial sketch pad: visual info -phonological loop: auditory info -serial position effect: remember items are the beginning and end the most
