Luke1, RN101, 3/31 I Introduction: Comparative Beginnings of the Synoptic Gospels Recall Mark’s plunge into the story with John the Baptist and “immediately” Jesus’ baptism Recall Matthew’s genealogy and its rehearsal of Jewish history; an outreach to Jews, trying to convince them that Jesus of Nazareth is the inheritor of all the promises and hopes of Israel: the son of Abraham and David the fulfillment of the prophets Note now Luke’s gospel also roots Jesus in the history and experience of Israel: it begins with the priest Zechariah praying in the Temple and ends with the disciples after Jesus death “continually praying in the Temple: (24: 52) But its whole thrust is to argue that the concept of “Israel” has been opened up: “Israel” no longer refers only to a particular people, a nation, Jerusalem; it refers now to a world movement and to a church which spreads all over the Roman empire and which aims to be universal. See this move outward from Israel to “the nations” highlighted when you contrast Matthew’s genealogy, which makes Jesus a son of Abraham and David, with Luke’s (3: 23-38, NOAB 102)), which begins with Jesus’ father Joseph (“as was thought”) and takes us back in time to Judah and Joseph and Jacob and Abraham and Shem and Noah and Seth, and Adam , to pronounce Jesus “son of God.” A genealogy that goes back before there was a chosen people.
