Strategic Initiative Paper Introduction Pepsi-Cola is one of the world's largest food and beverage companies in the world today. They sell and bottle in virtually every country in the world (Pepsi, 2008). Pepsi-Cola’s success stems from a high level of strategic and financial planning. Strategic and financial planning is such a vital part of a company’s success and failure. This paper will examine the strategic planning initiative for Pepsi-Cola and identify a strategic initiative discussed in Pepsi-Cola’s annual report. The authors of this paper will look at how will Pepsi-Cola’s initiative impact costs and sales. The authors will also look at the risks associated with the initiative and the financial impact that these risks may have on the company. Strategic Planning The term strategic planning is “an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.” (Strategic Planning, 2008) Strategic planning includes a company’s mission statement and corporate vision. PepsiCo’s mission statement is “To be the world's premier consumer Products Company focused on convenient foods and beverages. We seek to produce healthy financial rewards to investors as we provide opportunities for growth and enrichment to our employees, our business partners and the communities in which we operate. And in everything we do, we strive for honesty, fairness and integrity.” (PepsiCo, Inc., 2008) 2

Strategic Initiative Paper PepsiCo believes that they are a corporate citizen, and as such has a responsibility to give back to the communities in which they are located. This philosophy is expressed in our sustainability vision which states: “PepsiCo’s responsibility is to continually improve all aspects of the world in which we operate – environment, social, economic -- creating a better tomorrow than today.” (PepsiCo, Inc., 2008) PepsiCo’s vision is put into action through various programs and a focus on environmental responsibility, activities to benefit society, and a commitment to build shareholder value making PepsiCo persevere through the times. In their 2006 Annual Report PepsiCo states “We strive to do better by doing
