Mike Feldstein Gender Stereotypes in Educational Literature Unless you are desperately trying to study for a test, a biology textbook will never make you turn the pages like a John Grisham novel. The bland, monotonous writing that quickly distinguishes scientific resources from texts used in the humanities is the result of the objectivity required for publishing scientific textbooks. Because the reader will assume that all statements made are factual, the author must ensure that his own opinions are not falsely accepted as canon. Despite this stringent obligation for objectivity, subtleties in an author’s syntax can often reveal subdued sentiments about a subject. In reading through various biology textbooks, Emily Martin discovered a dramatic difference in the descriptions of male and female roles in the reproductive process.
