Where’s the other? Two observer states but not full members Vatican City Palestine o Actually not a sovereign state yet 16 other entities that kinda hang out: much more nebulous in their status may be recognized by some other states Abkhazia, Cook Islands, Kosozo, Taiwan, Transnestria, Digorno Paramount Republic? o if you count some of the not so legit entities with the 194 you come up with 206 ish but 194 is the one to remember - update #2: o Scotland had a referendum for independence Sept 18, 2014: Scottish referendum for independence Leave UK or stay? The “don’t leave” side one Largest voting turn out in history o Brexit: British exit form European Union 52% of British citizens voted to leave the EU so what? The vote wasn’t equal Scotland people overwhelmingly voted to stay in the EU o This is going to open up the whole independence issue again

September 4, 2016 Scotland wants to stay in the EU but Britain doesn’t, now Scotland might have a referendum again - Update #3: o Some folks were watching the referendum very closely and now they are watching it again o Catalonia was watching; may be following suit with Scotland Catalonia is the Northeastern part of Spain Kind of a big deal Has Barcelona in it Says that they don’t think the Spanish government is representative of themselves Spain has an issue with the Basques Basques have largely been quiet recently, it’s the Catalonians who are pissed off now
