August 22, 2016 World Regions Video Notes Video 4 So much going on we can’t be everywhere at once to personally interpret the “truth” of everywhere in the world We rely on others: books, newspapers, professors, family, friends, Facebook All news stories are published by people with opinions and therefore have biases for what they’re telling you o It’s important to recognize these biases o You need to understand where they’re coming from Two major camps of thought o Liberal left o Conservative right Lots of extremes and then lots in the middle o Most folks are in the middle Centrists: use ideas from both camps to solve issues and problems o “Leftist gorilla group” o “Right wing nuts” o what these words mean? Conservative right: like to conserve (keep the same); conserve tradition, political power, economical power, all about the old school, keep it the same; keep power in hands of those who already have power Liberal left: liberate or free everything to free ourselves form static tradition by using new perspectives and knowledge to put the power up for everyone to share (liberate; free) o How things aught to be: Conservative right: back to the “good ole days”; when everything was simpler and better; maintain tradition of fore fathers

Liberal left: maybe good ole days weren’t actually that good or if they were good for you it doesn’t mean that they were good for everyone; try new things o How to solve problems? Conservative right: look to historical text and ancient documents to answer questions: bible, quaran, etc. ancient thoughts; and of course the constitution and founding documents; reinforce tradition Liberal left: incorporate new science knowledge, biology, sociology, psychology; todays world is so different than it was; we must have new ways to do things o Distinctions:
