It used to be just between a few states, now it’s a bunch of countries binded together NATO is the biggest pact of its kind in human history NATO has some of the richest countries and most advanced technologies 3 declared nuclear powers biggest nuclear arsenal on the planet look at the past present and future of the world’s defense organization NATO basic training 4.2.1 NATO basic training Let’s start with basic training Question 1: What is NATO? o NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organization A defense pack between states that promise to protect each other if attacked by an outside force By anybody outside of the group o The only thing you need to remember is article 5:***** If you join NATO, you promise that if any single country in NATO is attacked, any attack on one means attack on everyone and all will repel the attack Any attack on any one is an attack on all of them personally Luxembourg is a member of NATO: could they really repel an attack from anyone? Russia, China, etc.

September 28, 2016 However, Luxemburg is a NATO member so if any nation outside of NATO attacks Luxembourg then they invoke article 5 and everyone goes and attacks whoever attacked Luxembourg Question 2: When did NATO form? o It started just after World War 2 Like UN o It was originially comprised of the good guy winners of WW2 except for the Russians o US, Canada, Western Europe France Italy Question 3: Why? o NATO was formed as an anti USSR block o After WW2, the USSR was formally an ally, but then they were seen as a major threat to western democracy The USSR had moved into eastern Europe and took over places and “liberated” them When the allies in the West met up with the soviets, the soviets stayed The other places became soviet puppet Poland, Hungary The threat was that USSR could have been so powerful that they rolled over the rest of Europe o This is why the USA came up with this plan to defend democracy o
