Question 1 (50 points) How would you use learning and motivational principles to encourage an 8-year-old child to study regularly? Include the following in your response: the use of positive and negative reinforcement, positive & negative punishment, shaping, and the use of schedules of reinforcement. In other words, describe the methods you recommend using, and why. Are there any factors that go beyond learning theory that need to be addressed, like the Premack principle, and how you will reach the ultimate goal of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation? Would you recommend using punishment, why or why not, and what kind is likely to be more beneficial? Be sure to discuss some of the potential problems with punishment. Encouraging an 8 year old child to study regularly can be quite a difficult task. To achieve the goal of shaping this child to study on a regular basis requires plenty of positive and negative reinforcement, while avoiding any kind of punishment. This is due to the fine-line that punishment is associated with in regards to the proper amount of severity and complicated task of administration in order to avoid undesirable side effects. For example, too little severity and untimely punishment is an ineffective manner to shaping behavior. In contrast, too much severity and frequent punishment can cause undue side effects such as anxiety and anger. Therefore, the need to avoid or limit the amount of punishment bestowed upon the child. However, positive and negative reinforcement by means of presenting a rewarding stimulus (positive reinforcement) or removing an aversive stimulus (negative reinforcement) is a much more appealing approach to encouraging a child to intrinsically study. An approach such as rewarding the child a trip to Chuck’E’Cheeses with his/her friends promotes a pleasant and social compensation following an arduous task.
