May 16, 2008 BEE 435 – Aquaculture Extra Credit Video Tape #3, Crawfish Aquaculture in the South (21 min) This video is an instructional video for farmers of the south of how to retrofit their farms to work as crawfish aquaculture farms. It is important to realize that crawfish is a potential cash crop for the southern United States. Currently, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and South Carolina are the major states that produce crawfish aquaculture. The total value of the crawfish crop is currently $100 million annually. Also, for every 100 thousand acres of crawfish ponds, 4000 jobs created. Before considering starting your own crawfish farm, there are many things to be considered. First you must look at the management areas. Do you have areas suitable for ponds? The location is very important; you need an area with heavy soil (such as clay) with poor drainage is good. If the ground has sandy soil, it is not a good place to have a pond. Also, you must make sure you have a quality water supply. You need a proper drain system that includes a return ditch system.
