Sam Bishop EALC Notes 1/23/07 Confucius and political matters : he trained his disciples to be people that were going to work in government. Law & Order- important for family members to shield each other with infractions of the law, instead of turn them into the authorities Legalism- the law is the law, either you obey it or you don’t. This conflicts with Confucius’ beliefs that family loyalty is of most importance. To Confucius- the family is the lynch pin of society. Confucius thought you could have as elaborate of a legal code that you wanted, and that people would get around the law if they really wanted to. Believed the legal code was negative. He believed it needed to be positive to encourage people to do good. The ruler and authority figures should be the example of how individuals should behave. Society could be controlled by giving something people could work toward positively- Confucius had a high opinion of human nature. People could recognize a good example when they saw it, and would thus follow it. Nobel people are
