Sam Bishop EALC 110 1/25/07 Xunzi = master. Lived during warring states period . Contributed with integral essays on certain topics; i.e. learning, the nature of heaven, human nature, etc. He was junior to Mencius- however Xunzi contrasted many of Mencius’ opinions about human nature. Confucius believes huiman nature is generally good from birth. He believed all people could achieve humaneness. Also beleieved that when the ruler sets a good example, the people would follow it. Xunzi says that human nature is NOT good from birth like Mencius believes.Believes that the tendency in nature is to go toward the bad, not toward the good, like Mencius believed. Xunzi says we have an emotional tendency towards evil. 3 natural tendencies that Xunzi believes we are born with- they are evil because they are selfish, and they tend naturally to go toward extremes 1)Xunzi believes we have a tendency to gain profit, so we don’t comply with rules. 2)We are born with envy and hate- absence of loyalty and faithfulness 3)We are born with desires of the eye and the ear- sensual desires, tendency to develop passion for beauty of form and sound.
