Chapter 21: Earth and the Human Denominator Introduction 175+ scientific investigations, experiments completed/underway to help us better understand Earth, life sys’s thru research in unique space envt; all of earth connected thru operation of planetary sys’s, and we want to understand linkages among Earth’s many sys’s The Human Count and the Future B/c human influence pervasive, the totality of our impact= human denominator ; tells how growing human pop/incr’g demand for resources, rising planetary impact causes whole Earth sys to adjust; yet Earth’s resource base ~fixed; more ppl alive today than in all history- 6.4 bil+ pop: Unevenly spread among countries; pop growth ~70 mil ppl/yr; 37% Earth’s pop live in 2 countries- China (21%), India (16%); pop ~young- ~30% under 15; ~all pop growth is in less-dvlpd countries ( LDC s), which hold 81% of total pop; more-dvlpd countries ( MDC s) have other 19% B/c ppl in MDCs produce greater impact on planet per person, they=>pop impact crisis; where P= pop, A= affluence (consumption per person), T= technology (lvl of envt’l impact per unit of production),
