DIONYSUS 1. Image: Dionysus a. Holding wine goblet, long hair, ivy in his hair, holding a grapevine, moving because he is dancing 2. Birth of Dionysus a. Had to become a god b. Semele and Zeus are his parents i. Nurse (Semele) – Hera follows Zeus to find that he is having an affair with Semele. Hera poses as a nurse to find answers. ii. Zeus offers Semele anything she could possibly want. She asks him to “make love to her with all his glory”. Zeus is hesitant at first but he agrees. 1. He grows into a ball of fire and consumes her. Zeus notices Semele is pregnant so he pulls the baby out of her and sticks it in his thigh. 2. Zeus gives birth to Dionysus – “twice born” c. Intervention of Hera i. Cadmus – Thebes ii. Polydorus – great grandfather of Oedipus iii. Autonoe – mother of Acteon iv. Semele – mother of Dionysus v. Agave – mother of Pentheus vi. Ino – sister of Semele, Dionysus was given to her to raise vii. Nymphs of Mt. Nusa, changed into a kid 1. Dionysus = Zeus of Mt. Nusa viii. Thrace? – near Philippi
