CYBELE 1. Cybele: The Great Mother a. Coin from the Roman imperial period. Cybele is pictured with the phrase: “Matri Magnae” – “the great mother”. b. Cybele is wearing a crown and holding a tympanum (drum). Also her throne is surrounded by lions. c. 600 BC -- Not originally a Greco-Roman divinity. She came from Phrygian (Asia Minor) aka modern day Turkey. i. Her cult was centered in Pessinus, worshiped there as mother nature goddess in the form of a black stone (meteorite) 2. Homeric Hymn: “to the Mother of the Gods” a. 6 th century b. “she delights in the clangor of castanets and drums, the roar of flutes, the clamoring of wolves and bright- eyed lions” i. Castanets = metal symbols that you clap together. c. Cybele likes wild things (hard to tame animals), loud blaring noises (“Goddess of heavy metal”) i. Wild things are tame and controlled under her power. d. Loss of control e. The uncivilized i. Her power is in passion, exuberance, ecstasy, etc .
