Name and describe the layers of skin (epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous) pg 955 epidermis- top layer of the skin, covering, provides a waterproof barrier. dermis- underneath the epidermis, contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. subQ- made of fat and connective tissue 2. What are the functions of the skin? Pg. 957 and table 31-1 on pg. 958protection, temp regulation, and sensation 3. What are factors that place individuals at risk for skin alterations? Pg. 957-959, Table 31-2-immobility, too much exposure to sunlight, too skinny, obese, surgery 4. What are age-related changes in the skin? P 960 and pg 964 focus on aging-sagging, lose collagen over time, age spots, skin cancers, fragile skin, easier to cause alterations. 5. Name and describe the type of wounds and causes. Pg 958-961, table 31-3 abrasion- friction against the body avulsion- characterized by a “flap” incision- cut with clean edges laceration- cut with jagged edges puncture-something passes through or impales the skin.
