Hjort 1 Green up your Summer Spring has sprung, and gone, now with the summer heat quickly bearing down on most of the country it is important to take a look at serious watering. This means getting the most for your dollar out of every drop of water used on your lawn and garden needs. The average American household uses 96 gallons of water outdoors per day (EPA). Out of this massive water usage it is estimated that up to 50% is wasted due to inefficient and improper watering practices. In this day and age people cannot afford to be so wasteful with such a valuable resource. The biggest culprit of outdoor water waste is the standard lawn irrigation system. They are predominant in many areas of the country, and can be quite wasteful. When starting your system up for the season be aware that the sprinkler heads need to be adjusted for optimum spray pattern, and for the best coverage of the lawn. This is something the homeowner can accomplish on their own using a simple rain gauge and measuring the output of their heads, as well as watching each individual zone for wasted water. An example would be a head that turns just a little bit too far and soaks the sidewalk, as well as the grass. All of that water is being wasted.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
