Individual Team Analysis Paper MGT-217 In order to obtain an in-depth understanding of the M.A.D.D. organization, we will explore the organizations history and its structure, which will include the following areas; the organization’s mission, its goals and objectives, organizational support, availability of resources, member relations along with group member characteristics, and leadership styles. History of the Organization: On May 03, 1980 a young girl by the name of Cari Lightner was walking, in a bicycle lane, near her home. A short time later she was struck by a motor vehicle and killed. The driver of the offending motor vehicle was highly intoxicated. He was out on bond for his forth drunk driving offense. Cari’s mother Candace Lightner soon founded what is known today as M.A.D.D.-Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in the state of California. Meanwhile, just prior to Cari Lightner’s tragic death, there was an infant child in the state of Maryland who also was the victim of a drunk driving accident. Five and a half month old Laura Lamb was involved in an automobile accident which left her in a quadriplegic state until her death seven years later. Her young death was the result of a drunk driving automobile crash she endured as an infant. Due to these two tragedies, two mothers from different parts of the country got mad and ultimately joined forces to expand the M.A.D.D. organization into its nationwide status. In October of 1980 the first M.A.D.D. national press conference was held in Washington D.C. The nation, for the first time, heard the tragic story of these to young girls, with Laura Lamb, in her wheel chair serving as the poster child. 2

Individual Team Analysis Paper MGT-217 Mission Statement: In 1984 the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers organization changed their name to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They decided that the organization didn’t want to focus on the individuals but on the criminal act of drunk driving. In 1999, M.A.D.D. again expanded its focus to educating and preventing underage drinking. During these years several mission statements were used and while the organizations goals and focus have changed, so has their mission. The revised mission statement focuses on preventing the problem of underage drinking, which consists of drinkers in the United States between the ages of 12 and 20, . This new mission statement reads, “The mission of Mothers against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking” Goals and objectives: The organizational goal of M.A.D.D is to eliminate drunk driving. M.A.D.D. intends to accomplish this goal through educating our youth. There were over 10 million people under the age of 21 who consumed alcohol last month M.A.D.D. supports tougher laws for those who refuse to consent to a blood alcohol concentration (B.A.C.) test.
