Nguyen 1 Tan Huy Hoang Nguyen Professor Infranco GenEd 111 06 November 2007 Gina Kolata The author of Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It , Gina Kolata, came to campus this evening. We had the wonderful opportunity to have the author of our Common Reading project fill us in on her thoughts and views of the 1918 flu pandemic. Gina Kolata provided plenty of information on the 1918 flu and a bit more. She stressed how low key these pandemics are kept from the public by government officials. Take for instance, the latest H5-N1 bird flu that had spread to humans first reported back in 1996. If you were like many Americans, we were not informed about this dangerous avian flu until 2003. Health officials were especially concerned about this avian flu strand because children and young adults were dying. This strain was found to have been caused by chickens in a “wet market” of sorts.
