Sam Bishop EALC 110 Midterm Review 2/15/07 Confucian common theme is the idea of humanism- attention focused on human beings as opposed to gods- humans are problems and need to look to humans to solve their problems, not look to gods, spirits to fix your problems The old religion of China believed in heaven, as directly involved in human affairs- opposed Confucian thought. Pre-Confucian thought- moral criteria of going into battle, having The Way (notion of Dao)- conscientiousness towards the people, gating the confidence of the spirits (being honest in prayer and sacrifices). Looking after the welfare of the people is most important, emphasis on human welfare. Can’t have success without support from the people. * Look at old stories of going to battle, and under what pretext. * Old legends of great kings of old and their contributions to society (e.g. Ox Tamer) Paragons of ideal rulers, Yao, Shan- believed in ideas of Confucian humanism.
