Network Technology Requirements2 Network Technology Requirements Define the basic concepts of networking technology, including cable network architecture. A computer network refers to connected devices such as laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones, and tablets that communicate with one another. Several types of networks include local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), enterprise networks, and service provider networks. A LAN is in one limited area, like an office, and is a network of connected devices. It can be both wireless or wired. A WAN is a much more extensive network that connects multiple LANs. The internet is considered a WAN. When a WAN is used to provide connectivity to users in the form of internet or cellular service, it is referred to as a service provider network. Enterprise networks use both LAN and WAN to connect campus sites or business branches (What Is Computer Networking?, 2021). A network uses devices such as firewalls, switches, routers, and wireless access points to function. Routers allow for communication from one network to another, and firewalls provide security between those connected networks. A wireless access point will allow the user to use laptops, smartphones, and tablets without the need for an ethernet cable to connect to the local network (What Is Computer Networking?, 2021). Two primary types of cabling are used in today's networks, copper and fiber optic. Copper has a distance limitation of 100 meters but is more cost-effective (Why Switch From Copper to Fiber?, n.d.). Fiber, on the other hand, while more costly, can do much greater distances. Multimode OM4 fiber supports lengths up to 400 meters between the devices. If you need to go even greater a distance, single-mode fiber can reach 40 km with a speed of 10Gb,
Network Technology Requirements3 much faster than copper wiring (Single-Mode vs. Multimode Fiber Optic Cable: What's the Difference?, 2021).
