LAN Requirements2 LAN Requirements 1.What network topology will be used on this Local Area Network? For this project, I recommend using a hybrid topology, specifically a star with a partial mesh shown in figure 1. Given the size of the building and the location of the IT department, I feel that this will be the best design option to be implemented. A star topology uses a core switch in the center of the network. If this device were to malfunction, the entire network could go down with a single point of failure (The Star Network - Network Types and Topologies - GCSE ICT Revision, n.d.). When you add the partial mesh topology to the star, you create a form of redundancy to stop that from happening (GeeksforGeeks, 2020). 2.Which network devices are appropriate for this project, and what is the functionality of each one? To properly set up the LAN and establish a working connection for the hospital, the following devices will need to be used: Desktops and Laptops – This project requires that 85 desktops and 30 laptops be installed in offices for the employees. The desktops will be all-in-one machines with touch screens and web cameras for virtual visits. The laptops will also include touch screens and web cameras. Network cables – network cables are used to connect devices to transfer data between the devices. Twisted pair Cat5E ethernet cables are recommended for this project. They are the most commonly used for a LAN network and provide higher bandwidth speeds than Cat5 (Xpert Technologies, 2019). Fiber Optics could be used, but Cat5e will be considerably more cost-effective.
LAN Requirements3 PoE switches – Power over Ethernet access layer switches allows a single network cable to transfer data and supply power simultaneously. The devices that use this technology are IP cameras, IP phones, and wireless access points (Sheldon, 2016). Routers – routers are used to route traffic between your device to the internet. The router connects to the modem, which brings the internet connection from the ISP to your location, and then delivers the internet connection to your network (Norton, n.d.). Next-Gen Firewalls – a next-generation firewall provides the same features and security as a traditional firewall and includes more advanced features. Next-gen firewalls will also give you application awareness and control, cloud threat intelligence, and intrusion prevention (CISCO, 2021). Given the nature of the facility, a firewall with more security benefits is highly recommended.
