Federico Nusymowicz Period 4 Urbanization and the Taming of the West Comstock Act is an 1873 United States federal law that made it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, and/or lascivious" materials through the mail, including contraceptive devices and information. Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard (September 28, 1839-February 17, 1898) was an American educator, temperance reformer, and women's suffragist. Willard was elected president of United States Women's Christian Temperance Union in 1879 , a position which she held for life. She created the Formed Worldwide W.C.T.U. in 1883 , and was elected its president in 1888 . Mary Baker Eddy (born Mary Morse Baker July 16, 1821 - December 3, 1910) founded the Church of Christ, Scientist in 1879 and was the author of its fundamental doctrinal textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures . Booker Taliaferro Washington ( April 5 , 1856 November 14 , 1915 ) was an American political leader, educator and author . He was one of the dominant figures in African American history in the United States from 1890 to 1915. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (pronounced [d ʊ bo ˈ ɪ z]) (February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. He became a naturalized citizen of Ghana in 1963 at the age of 95. Lewis "Lew" Wallace (April 10, 1827 – February 15, 1905) was a lawyer, governor, Union general in the American Civil War, American statesman, and author, best remembered for his historical novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ . Henry James, OM ( April 15 , 1843 February 28 , 1916 ), son of theologian Henry James Sr. and brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James , was an American -born author and literary critic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
