Lesson 10: Organisms Sense Their Environment
Sensory receptors detect signals from both inside and outside the body
Receptors that detect stimuli within the body are called interoceptors
o
Outside are called exteroceptors
3 Categories of Receptors and Function:
Mechanoreceptors
o
Touch
o
Hearing (special sense)
o
Balance (special sense)
Special because receptors are located in an organ specialized for that
particular sense
Chemoreceptors
o
detect chemical stimuli
o
taste (special sense)
o
smell (special sense)
o
pH
Electromagnetic Receptors
o
Vision (special sense)
o
Detect electromagnetic energy such as light and heat
