Federico Nusymowicz 11/6/06 Period 4 The Slave Controversy and Manifest Destiny ID Planter aristocracy : south plantation owners, rich, slaves, and all that. “Black belt”: the social and demographic crescent of 623 southern counties that contain a higher than average percentages of African American residents. These counties are highly contiguous and form a belt-like pattern across parts of 11 states. “Peculiar institution”: euphemism for slavery. Sojourner Truth: an American abolitionist born into slavery from Hurley, New York.Also played a role in the female rights movement. Nat Turner: an American slave whose failed slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, was the most remarkable instance of black resistance to enslavement in the antebellum Southern United States. Hanged. Denmark Vesey: an African American slave and, later, a freeman, who is alleged to have planned what would have been a large slave rebellion had word of the plans not been leaked. “Gag resolution”: pro-slavery people forbade the discussion of abolitionist petitions in congress. John Quincy Adams: an American lawyer, diplomat, politician, and President of the United States (March 4, 1825 – March 4, 1829). His party affiliations were Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later Whig. Adams was the son of U.S. President John Adams, and Abigail Adams. He is most famous as a diplomat
