Poverty of the stimulus: babies don’t seem to be given the right kind of input. The speech is almost never corrected. There never taught how to speak correctly. They’re never taught negative evidence. And its hard to understand what people are saying. Slips of the tongue, false starts, other noise. Learn it at a rapid rate, about 3 years. There must be something hardwired in that enables babies to learn language. Chomsky called it language acquisition device. It is a module in your brain that allows you to learn language. Universal grammar. Adults don’t seem to be able to learn language at all. There even is a second language acquisition ability. They don’t learn language the same way babies do. This module shuts down after a certain time. Part of the critical age hypothesis. Evidence: Language acquisition Genie-12yr old locked away Universal* New languages Nicaraguan style language: for the deaf Nicaraguans, children learned it better than the adults Creole languages: languages born out of the slave trade, slaves from different languages all mixed together, and they develop a pigeon language (point and speak).
