Cut and Fill Calculations
Introduction:
This lab’s purpose was to show how to calculate the amount of space that would be filled or cut
from a building site. It also showed how to calculate the shrinkage and swell factor as well as the
price for removing soil or bringing soil in.
Procedures:
1.
Use the data from lab 9 for the elevations of each point in the footprint area.
2.
Remembering that the 25ft setback area’s elevation will be 2 feet below point A’s
ground elevation, and that the building footprint’s elevation will be 2 feet above
point A’s ground elevation, use the trapezoidal rule to find the area of the
footprint that will be cut or filled.
3.
Start with the first row of points at the 0 ft marker and determine the new
elevation of each point taking the 2 feet rules in step 2 into account. Use the
equation for the trapezoidal rule to find the area that needs to be cut or filled.
