Chem 400 Chapter 4 Lecture Notes Part 4 Redox Rxns, Continued Remember Our Goals 1) Learn how to assign oxidation states to all the atoms in a substance. 2) Using oxidation numbers, determine whether the rxn is a redox rxn. 3) If it is a redox rxn, determine which reactant is being oxidized and which is being reduced. 4) Balance the redox rxn. (This is often tricky, and you can’t always use the traditional method used in Chapter 3.) 5) For single displacement redox rxns, learn the activity series to predict whether a rxn will occur and what the products are. Balancing a Redox Rxn • Although many simple combustion and single displacement rxns are very easy to balance using the traditional method, there are many other redox rxns where using the traditional method is not good. • Either it gives you the wrong answer, or it is simply impossible to balance! • Example: Mn 2+ (aq) + NaBiO 3 (s) + H + (aq) MnO 4 - (aq) + Bi 3+ (aq) + Na + (aq) + H 2 O(l) • Have fun balancing! • The main reason why it is so hard to balance redox rxns normally, is that we ignore the electrons! • We need to balance electrons in a redox rxn, just as we balance atoms. • You will learn how to balance using the half-rxn method. • In the half-rxn method, you break the rxn equation into 2 parts, the reduction half and the oxidation half. You balance them separately, then add them together, making sure the electrons cancel. Rules
