o Complementary Role- One person holds a higher position than the other in the communication process Communication o A combination of verbal and nonverbal behaviors integrated for the purpose of sharing information Metacommunication o Term used to describe all of the factors (verbal and nonverbal cues) that influence the flow of the message is perceived Verbal Nonverbal Culture Body Language Native Language Culture Gender Gender Vocal Pitch Appearance o Example: A nurse states loudly, “I need help” (Eyes relaxed no hurry) Another nurse states “I need help!” (Eyes wide open and scared) o Verbal and nonverbal congruent Verbal Communication o Meaning: Denotative- real meaning (dictionary meaning)

Connotative- personal meaning o Verbal Style Factors: 1. Moderate pitch and tone Paralanguage- the oral delivery of a verbal message, expressed though tone of voice, inflection, sighing, and so on 2. Varies vocalization Punctuated vs Lyrical or singsong qualities 3. Encouraged client involvements 4. Validates clients worth “warm” style 5. Advocate as necessary 6.
