Chapter 15: Acids & Bases and Aqueous Equilibrium Part 4 Factors in Acid Strength (and Base Strength) There are several main factors in acid strength: The H—A bond strength (how easy is it to break this bond) The H—A bond polarity or how large of a ± + is on the H atom The charge on the acid The stability of the conjugate base A- These factors do not always coincide, in fact, often times the bond strength and the bond polarity are opposites. The H—A bond strength is the predominate factor when you compare acids in the same group, like HF, HCl, HBr, and HI. Within a group, the bigger the size of the atom, the longer the bond length, and the weaker the bond is. So HF, with the smallest halide, has the shortest bond length, the strongest bond, and is so the weakest hydrogen halide acid. HI, with the weakest bond, is the strongest hydrogen halide acid.
