Chapter 15: Acids & Bases and Aqueous Equilibrium Part 3 Polyprotic Acids Many acids contain more than 1 “acidic” protons: protons that ionize or dissociate. Some examples are: H 2 SO 4 , H 2 CO 3 , H 3 PO 4 , H 3 PO 3 , H 3 AsO 4 , H 2 S, H 2 C 2 O 4 For a di- or triprotic acid, we can still calculate equilibrium concentrations, but there are two or three K a ’s to deal with. • H 3 PO 4 K a1 K a2 K a3 Note how the K a gets smaller as each proton is removed. This should make sense as the second proton is being removed from a negative ion, so it should be harder to remove. Here is a typical polyprotic acid problem: Determine the equilibrium concentrations and pH of all species present in a 0.0750M sln of hydrosulfuric acid (hydrogen sulfide).
