Federico Nusymowicz Changes on Sexual Ratios in the US Workforce as Related to Wages Neoclassical Theory does in fact hold; the gender-wage ratio, while far from perfect, shows encouraging signs of approaching the ideal sex-blind meritocracy an enlightened society should adopt. The ratio of women to men in the work force has been, since 1979, steadily increasing – and the gap between the male and female median wages has been steadily closing. All data mentioned below extracted from Lawrence, Bernstein, and Allegretto’s The State of Working America 2006/2007 , Table 3.25. From 1979 to 1989, from 1989 to 1995, from 1995 to 2000, and most recently from 2000 to 2005, the ratio of women to men in the work force has been steadily increasing – to the recently recorded 2005 ratio of .820. This means, assuming that the supply of laboring men stayed (proportionally to economic growth) constant, the overall quantity of labor supply increased, as women and men compete for jobs.
