Voting Essay The right to suffrage we Americans have fought and died for throughout the centuries is, ironically, effectively utilized by less than half of our population. Efforts to increment this figure have been made through several legislative efforts, but to little avail: voter turnouts show steadily declining patterns, a clear sign of declining political efficacy. Yet categorizing the American population yields invaluable information as to who votes and who doesn’t: the educated have a higher tendency to participate in the political system than the non-educated, Blacks and Whites are more likely vote than Hispanics and Asians, older citizens attend voting booths more often than do younger ones, and women value their political voice more highly than men. Throughout history, the US government has continually attempted to expand voting rights; through laws such as the Fifteenth, Nineteenth, Twenty-third, Twenty- fourth, and Twenty-sixth Amendments, along with the Voting Rights Act, virtually every citizen 18 years of age or older has the ability to vote. Yet in the year 2000, only 51.3% of the voting age population cast its vote, according to the US EAC; this figure declined to somewhat less than 50% in the 2004 presidential election.
