Psych 111 Module 2 50 First Dates Henry Roth, a marine veterinarian in Hawaii, lives his life from one-night-stand to one- night-stand looking for the perfect girl. That is, until he meets Lucy Whitmore, an art teacher, at a local café. As the sparks fly, Henry and Lucy say goodbye and everything appears to be normal. The next day, however, Lucy doesn’t seem to know who Henry is or have any recollection of meeting him the day before. As the day continues, Henry is astonished to learn the truth about his dream girl. A year earlier, Lucy was in a car accident which lead to hospitalization for severe head trauma. The accident resulted in her inability to form new memories. She is able to remember everything up until the day of the accident, October 13, 2002. The head trauma must have been to her hippocampus which is the main structure of memory. Destruction of the hippocampus produces a major deficit in the ability to encode new episodic memories. Episodic memories are memories about one’s own experiences and as Lucy is unable to remember the things she did all
