Andrew Golden Mr. Gruskin AP U.S. History 5 January 2007 The Whigs and the Federalists, a Comparison Although historically represented as very different, distinct political parties, the Federalists and the Whigs in fact shared a common political ideology, represented many of the same interest groups, and proposed similar programs and policies. Essentially, the Federalists and the Whigs were of the same political party. With the fall of the Federalist party in the 1820’s after the Hartford convention, the tainted name lost its credibility and popularity and fizzled out of existence while its strong ideas and ideology remained. And in 1832, a new group took a strong place in the government’s party system with old ideas and a fresh name, the Whigs. The Whigs and the Federalists alike, both shared similar political ideologies, directly opposing the Democrat Republican Party, who as early as 1828, adopted the once-tainted name of “Democrats.” During the period of the Federalist party, direct opposition to Thomas Jefferson and his Democrat Republicans was just as common as the direct opposition to Andrew Jackson’s Democrats during the Whig era. In addition, the Federalists and the Whigs similarly sought a strong central government. The Whig ideology of having a strong congress to take power away from an overly powerful executive branch can be directly associated with the Federalists’ common goal of having a powerful central government.
