Rauschmayer 1 An Argument for the Viewing of Executions The paper “An Argument Against Allowing the Families of murder Victims to View Executions” argues just that. That the families of victims of murders should not have the right to view the executions. The author begins the article by claiming that victim’s families cite two reasons for wanting to be present during an execution; closure, and the desire to represent the victim. These are both fair reasons, but the most obvious reason is not mentioned. Revenge. The families desire for revenge is certainly a motivating factor for viewing an execution. Closure and representation can be achieved at various times and ways during the whole criminal process. Revenge is the only reason that specifically requires the condemned to die in their presence. Revenge is not mentioned in this article for a very specific reason. The author’s arguments rely on the assumption that victim’s families only seek closure and the desire to represent the victim. This assumption is false and narrow- minded. Revenge factors into a victims decisions to witness an execution. The author’s first argument is that viewing executions has not provided satisfaction to the victim’s families. He supports this mainly by discussing how families had wished for a more painful form of execution. He states that many families thought the condemned died too easy of a death. One is forced to wonder why families, who only seek closure and desire to represent the victim during the justice process, think that the execution was too easy. The desire for a painful death seems more consistent
