CNS cont… 02/05/2008 16:40:00 BRAIN     Diencephalon     Mostly gray matter 3 components  1.   Thalamus ~ 80% relay station (gateway to cerebrum) 2.   Epithalamus pineal gland secretes melatonin  hormone helps to regulate sleep cycle (increases in evening to  prepare for sleep) 3.   Hypothalamus visceral control center Regulates: Hunger/thirst (by monitoring salt concentrations) Body temp (initiates sweating/shivering) Glandular secretion
