Ameena Pirzada Period 3 10/28/15 Biological Bases of Behavior Free Response In order for Chef Michael to participate in the cooking competition, he will need to use several different parts and functions of his brain. Plasticity is the brain’s capacity for modification. While preparing for the cooking competition, Chef Michael’s brain will be constantly adapting to various conditions. For example, if he is preparing his food, and realizes that he forgot a certain ingredient, his brain needs to adapt to these conditions, in order to make it easier for him to make new decisions. Plasticity will assist Chef Michael while preparing by helping his brain modify and adapt smoothly to new conditions. The hypothalamus is a structure lying below the thalamus, and directs several maintenance activities, including eating, drinking, and body temperature. It helps govern the endocrine system via the pituitary gland, and is linked to emotion. While preparing for the competition, Chef Michael must be able to keep himself calm, in order to display a confident attitude in front of the other competitors. Along with this, he might become thirsty before the competition begins. The hypothalamus will help him
