Gap Analysis: Global Communications 2 Gap Analysis: Global Communications This paper investigates the problems facing Global Communications. Global Communications has to make some changes in order to stay competitive. Some changes include offering their customers new services, and other changes include cost cutting strategies. When cost cutting includes layoffs and salary reductions and there is a poor hierarchical communications system, an ethical dilemma and public relations nightmare begins. Several challenges must be overcome in order to bridge the gap between Global Communications’ End- State Goals and their End-State Vision. Situation Analysis Issue and Opportunity Identification Global Communications gained approval to enter and compete in global markets and step up their globalization. In order to do this some jobs would be relocated, and other jobs would be lost. The move was necessary to the growth of the company. The first issue faced was to communicate the change to the union and their employees. Maria Antez, the Vice President in Technologies Workers Union, has served as the liaison between management and the union. Management needed to discuss the move with Maria, so that she could communicate with the union. Unfortunately, Maria had been completely left out of the plans. Maria was put into a touch spot because she had to tell the union that there were to be layoffs due to outsourcing. This lack of communication made it hard for Maria and the union to cooperate with management’s decision. Global Communications lost the support of the union

In the future management should work more closely with its labor union, and involve them in these meetings and strategy planning sessions. During the Senior Staff Meeting Sy Rodriguez stated his concern for how they should communicate to the employees about the new plan. He urged that the need to address the employees quickly to eliminate the chances of them hearing about the plan through the grapevine. Some people had already heard of the upcoming changes and they needed to act fast. If employees hear things from the grapevine then they feel that management is hiding things from them. Perhaps some tools could be instilled to better communicate the company’s direction to its employees. Tools such as: newsletters, postings on an intranet system, or a management by walking around strategy could be utilized in the future. Another communication problem that occurred at the Senior Staff Meeting was a personal barrier brought up by Joel Thompson, the Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Public Relations. He perceives that the union does not understand the relationship between management and their employees like the Europeans do. Management has this preconceived notion that the union is not easy to work with. This stereotyping of the union hinders the
