Dani Adams Mid-Term Exam Part III Prof. Reyes-Santos Vradenburgh Friday/3pm Ethnic Studies 101 10/31/07 “Dick Tracy’s Secret Detective Methods” and “The Intersection of Race and Gender” Dick Tracy was a popular character during the mid-1900’s, solving criminal cases and being the archetypical hero many young people admired. Looking back today it seems very few people would consider categorizing people into races and subgroups and determining which are more likely to commit crimes as a job for a detective. Don’t we all have our own unique demeanor and predispositions for certain things—such as turning into a “low class criminal” or “high class criminal” (Quaker Oats 7) that has nothing to do with our facial features or ethnic types? And why is it necessary to recognize intersectionality? The idea that no one of a certain faction can be grouped together with everyone similar to them is expanded in Kimberle Williams Crenshaw’s article, “The Intersection of Race and Gender” in which she discusses that each race and gender has different dimensions, focusing particularly on women of color.
