2Selected Issue and Impact on Quality of Care and Patient SafetyAlthough the main focus of the nursing profession is to help patients, nurses operate in ahighly charged environment and in situations where emotions might boil over. In nursing, bullying and workplace violence are serious issues in all settings. Bullying is therefore defined asharmful and unwanted actions that are intended to offend, humiliate, and cause distress to therecipient (Al Omar et al., 2019). On the other hand, workplace violence includes both physicaland verbal aggression that might be delivered by colleagues or patients. Bullying and workplaceviolence, therefore, have a significant impact not only on the well-being of nurses but also on theability of nurses to provide quality care to their patients (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019).Workplace violence directed at nurses will contribute to stress and anxiety among the victimsand will significantly affect the ability of nurses to provide quality healthcare services to theirpatients. Nurses who have experienced bullying among other types of aggression are, therefore, more likely to make medical errors that will endanger the lives of their patients compared tonurses that do not experience workplace violence. Toxic environment also contributes to highturnover rates in that nurses who experience such incidents in the workplace are more likely toquit, with the high turnover rates for nurses contributing to poor staffing ratios in healthcarefacilities (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019). Bullying and workplace violence can also contribute tonurses not spending adequate time with patients in that such nurses may feel stressed anddisinterested in their work which will eventually contribute to poor outcomes among patients(Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019).
3Application of Professional Standards of Practice in Rectifying the IssueProfessional standards of practice for nursing can be applied to address the issue ofbullying and workplace violence, including assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, evaluation, ethics, education, evidence-based practice, and researchcommunication leadership and collaboration (Lim et al., 2022).
